You should call Legal Aid and file for bankruptcy to buy some time. You may also be the victim of predatory lending and may be able to file a civil rights lawsuit, which would delay the foreclosure and cause the mortgage company to explain how you got the unfair mortgage in the first place. Sometimes, the mortgages are sold to other companies and none of them have kept the original paperwork which can void the mortgage altogether. Seak to a legal aid attorney about this.

Also call or go online to apply for US Census jobs. They are actively looking for thousands of people at a very decent pay to do the 2010 Census. They assign you near where you live. I do not know your background, but they have regular enumerator jobs and supervisory jobs.

Dear Mr. Obama:

I have been in and out of homelessness since being honorably discharged as a USMC Vietnam veteran in 1969. I wound up homeless then, in and out of homelessness with my two sons in the Eighties, and homeless on my own again in the Nineties.

I started the American Homeless Society in 1987 while my sons and I were homeless in California. I have been in several hunger strikes, marches and demonstrations for homeless rights since then but have seen little progress.

My longest hunger strike was 58 days against President Reagan’s “trickle down” economic policies that created much more instead of less homelessness in our country. You now speak about fixing our nation’s economy from the “bottom up” and that should mean you are starting by ending involuntary homelessness at the bottom.

HUD Secretary Philip Mangano has been promoting 10-year plans to end homelessness in major cities across the country on behalf of the Bush Administration for the past few years. We would hope and pray you make a similar commitment to abolish homelessness but throughout our nation, not just in individual cities because there are far more homeless than these urban plans will ever reach.

Slavery was abolished in America over a century ago; why not abolish homelessness today, Mr. Obama? Homelessness is just as bad as slavery in several ways and much worse in others.

Men, women and children from all the races, colors, cultures, nationalities, ethnicities, religions and creeds in our diverse society find themselves homeless daily. They are forced to endure harassment, discrimination and persecution in our nation today much like the slaves President Lincoln’s armies fought to free in the Nineteenth Century.

America’s homeless are also forced to endure nature’s harshest conditions without warm homes or shelter for protection; without good food and nutrition; without essential hygiene, medicine and healthcare; and without the necessary education, training or experience required to qualify for the dwindling supply of jobs in today’s worsening economy. Many of America’s homeless today are even employed but underemployed and unable to afford existing rentals while thousands of others are altogether unemployable.

How can our great nation permit so many of these poor souls to continue to suffer and die needlessly on our streets? I joined the Marines to fight for my country in the Sixties so that all Americans could have a better life, not just the rich and well-to-do who are receiving all the bailouts today.

The list of barriers and obstacles facing today’s homeless goes on and on, Mr. Obama. Please, if you are serious about fixing our nation’s economy from the bottom-up, begin at the real bottom by making a firm commitment to end involuntary homelessness throughout our country without further ado.

UPDATE: I had to give my children to my ex husband July 2009. A cousin of mine here in Florida offered to take me in so I took her up on her offer. I now have a boyfreind and we are currently living together. Still not able to find work. I am recieving some money from my ex shortly from a divorce settlement and I am going to use that money to go back to school so my chances of finding work are greater.

Hi i am 28 yrs old and a single mother of three i have a 5yr a 2yr (well almost 2, Dec 30th she will be) and a 1 yr old. I am about to lose everything, it's winter and the gas is already shut off, i have an electric space heater but the electric is going to be shut off tomorrow, My storage unit is past due so i am going to lose everything, i am also past due on my rent and just waiting to get kicked out.

First off i dont want handouts i want a JOB. I am used to working hard everyday to take care of my family. I lost my job after getting hurt at work (almost broke my back)i did sue the company for the dr bills and Dr bills ONLY. So in return i got black listed in this town and cant find a job anywhere. When i went to the unemployment office they flat out told me they wont help me find a job after looking at my background. ((Pepsie Owns more business than not here,,))i dont do drugs and cant afford to drink. The worst thing i have done in my life was have a non working tail light, so i am not a felon or anything. because i got hurt i cant find work at all.

My kids dad pays $1.00 every three months for child support. That by Oklahoma standards is enough to keep him out of jail. I think they should do something about that glich in the system. Also he HATES the kids and has nothing to do with them no matter how hard i try to get him to do right and see them. So there is no sending my kids there,

As far as family my dad lost his job after 37 yrs of being there (thank you AT&T) so my dad is hard up and cant help us. My mom wont help she always says "go ask your dad i have my own bills that i have to pay and i am not paying yours to"

I just dont know what to do, It seems my family's next step in life will be living in my truck I have called the local shelters and they are all full.

Will soon face homelessness myself. Not your typical case, from upper middle class into poverty due to a nerve disease. Tooks years to get a dx and many other issues have popped up since I lost medical insurance. My illness lost me a job of 20 years as a Sr. Project Manager, so tried working for myself and did OK until it progressed, still tried doing odd jobs duct taping tools to my hands so I wouldn't drop them.
I think the hardest thing worse than disease is losing all you worked for for year, watching your family go into poverty, ect.
Have no family and wife and son had to move away to stay with one of her relatives....
I feel for all those ill that have to live in severe pain on the streets. Had my Doctors listened and gave a damn I doubt I would be here or least treatment could've prolonged it much longer. I don't know how anyone lives like this. I don't think I could live ill on the street.

Hi. I am 39 years old, and have a 5 month old wonderful baby boy and my rock, my 13 year old son. My fiance and I were involved in a domestic dispute and he was arrested. He was our only support, I wasn't working because of the baby. At the end of may, we will be homeless. I have called every agency here where we live, and no one can help, not even the churches. They all say there isn't any money for rent. I am scared to death. I don't even have a car. He took both vehicles, they were in his name. I'm not looking for a handout, just maybe some info. I have been living with my mom, but she suffers from mental problems and has really went over the edge. She was always my only support system but now due to her illness she hates me.
